Andy Murray is the coach of Novak Djokovic and when the Serb announced it, it took everyone in the tennis community by surprise. No one, including Holger Rune, had expected it.
Murray retired at the Paris Olympics with Wimbledon being his last tournament on the ATP Tour. There were predictions about what Murray would do post his retirement and his becoming a coach to a British player was what some thought.
Djokovic had no coach in his team since March because of his split from Croatian coach Goran Ivanisevic. Even though Djokovic was coachless, that Murray would be coaching him was never anticipated. Shocked though everyone is, they are expecting good results from their partnership, and Rune, who is 2-4 against Djokovic, thinks the collaboration will benefit them both.
Murray will be on Djokovic’s team at the Australian Open but the decision of further extension of the partnership will be taken after the event in Melbourne. Djokovic lost in the semifinal to eventual champion Jannik Sinner this season in the major event Down Under.
Holger Rune says Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray have high tennis IQ
Andy Murray, being a tennis great himself, has played many matches against other greats and even against the youngsters who are now challenging 37-year-old Novak Djokovic. Murray has defeated Djokovic 11 times in their 36 meetings and this is one of the reasons why Holger Rune thinks the two legends joined forces.
Djokovic, who was trophyless on the ATP Tour in 2024, is set to start his season at the Brisbane International before arriving in Melbourne to begin his quest for his 25th Major. As per reports, Murray won’t be traveling to Brisbane.
