Holger Rune moved into the Indian Wells quarterfinals after his dominating 6-4, 6-4 win over eighth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas. The match, which lasted for 90 minutes, saw Rune smash 22 winners, including a shot of the tournament.
Rune saved a break point at 15-40 in the second set by hitting a stunning tweener. During the rally, the 21-year-old predicted the ball’s direction and rushed toward the net, but Tsitsipas made him run back.
And it was then that the Dane hit the ball back between his legs. Rune knew that he did something incredible during the match, as he said later that he would be watching the shot when he would be checking his phone.
The tweener is the first thing I am going to check when I check my phone. That was better than I expected. I think my return was very good and I focused on my court positioning because when you give Stef too much space on the forehand he is very dangerous. I had to really take control of the point.
Holger Rune said during his on-court interview
Rune has now improved his head-to-head record over the two-time Grand Slam finalist to 4-0. The Greek entered the tournament in his bid to claim his second title of the season following his victory at the Dubai Open, where the 26-year-old ended his trophy drought with a straight-set win over Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final.
I have had good success against him in the past, but that didn’t mean it would [happen again]. I really took charge of the points and was really committed to my game.

Holger Rune didn’t expect the tweener to land inside the baseline
Holger Rune hitting the tweener was a crucial moment during the match, as it completely changed the outcome. Rune quickly claimed the rest of the points to emerge victorious to progress to the last eight. Rune didn’t think the ball would land in, calling the shot a “better tweener” he hit in his life.

I think, you know, I saw him hit that lob and I was like, ‘Go out, go out, go out’, you know. And then it just, you know, clicked on the baseline and I thought, ‘Okay, what am I going to do?’ And you know, the first instinct was just hit the tweener and I thought, I hit it to try to make it, you know…I didn’t expect it to land in, I was expecting, ‘Okay, fall here, the match is still going’.
Holger Rune told Tennis Channel
Rune has now reached his ninth ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinals. His best performance in the category came in 2022 when he won the Paris Masters.
Rune is set to lock horns with Tallon Griekspoor next. The Dutchman, before setting up the clash with the World No.13, knocked out Japan’s Yosuke Watanuki. He is in red-hot form, having defeated World No.2 Alexander Zverev in the second round.
Holger Rune reaches back-to-back Indian Wells quarterfinals
Reaching the Indian Wells quarterfinals is the biggest result of the season for Holger Rune. Prior to the first ATP Masters 1000 tournament in the California desert, Rune produced his best when he advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open.

He had a forgetful campaign in the Golden Swing as he failed to win more than one match. The 12th seed has also become the first Scandinavian to reach two quarterfinals on the trot at Indian Wells since Stefan Edberg in 1994-95. Rune is searching for his first ATP title since winning the 2023 BMW Open.
