If there is one thing to know about professional athletes, it’s that they absolutely hate sitting still. Tell a tennis player to rest, and they’ll probably find a way to do footwork drills in their sleep.

Danish sensation Holger Rune is currently finding this out the hard way. After a devastating exit from the Stockholm Open back in October, where he left the court in tears and pretty much broke the hearts of tennis fans everywhere, Rune has been on the long, grueling road to recovery. But recently, the discourse around his rehab took a turn for the dramatic on social media. Rune wrote on X:

You can’t stay in bed because you are scared of falling . You need to push within the limits of what you can do and improve and increase whenever allowed . You most certainly can help the healing process by being active within certain frames of each step of the recovery.

Rune underwent surgery for a proximal break in his Achilles tendon. It’s a nasty injury. The kind that makes one wince just thinking about it. Since going under the knife, he has been pretty active online, sharing snippets of his recovery journey. While most fans are just happy to see him upright, some are getting a little nervous that the 22-year-old is pushing the pedal to the metal a little too hard.

One fan even decided to voice what a lot of people were apparently thinking. They hopped into the comments with a warning that was equal parts concerned mother and ominous fortune teller. The fan suggested Rune should maybe give tennis legend Kim Clijsters a call. Why? Because Clijsters famously ruptured her Achilles tendon at a legends event recently.

Holger Rune refuses to live in fear

Holger Rune saw the comment and decided to clarify his mindset. He didn’t ignore it; he engaged with it. His response was quite telling about the kind of competitor he is.

He went on to explain that being active, within the specific boundaries set by his doctors, is actually part of the healing process. It’s a fair point.

Modern sports medicine isn’t just “lie on the couch and watch Netflix for six months.” It’s about mobility, blood flow, and preventing the rest of the body from becoming too stiff while the injury heals. Rune clearly feels that sitting around scared of a setback is worse than the work itself.

The long road back to the ATP Tour for Holger Rune

Despite his optimistic attitude and refusal to “stay in bed,” the reality is that Holger Rune is facing a massive layoff. The general consensus from the medical experts (the real ones, not the Twitter ones) is a recovery timeline of nine to 12 months.

Since the injury happened in October, there is a scenario where Rune could miss the entire Grand Slam calendar for the next year. That is a brutal pill to swallow for a star who is currently ranked 15th in the world and has been knocking on the door of greatness for a while now.

Sure, he will have a protected ranking when he finally returns to the ATP Tour, but momentum is a fickle thing in tennis. Losing a year of development in your early 20s is tough. However, if his spicy response to the worried fan is any indication, Rune isn’t lacking in the mental toughness department. He seems determined to grind through this, crutches and all.

It is worth noting that even fellow pros are getting spooked. Jessica Pegula mentioned she was “scared” watching footage of Rune training recently. When your peers are watching through their fingers, the fans may have a point.
