Danish tennis player Holger Rune is currently suffering from a horrible patch of form. He has been winless since his quarterfinal run in the 2023 Wimbledon Open, which is a worrying statistic. The 20-year-old suffered back-to-back first-round exits in the Canadian Open, Cincinnati Masters, and US Open. Rune’s mother has now revealed that a back injury that he suffered in the Italian Open is the main reason for his poor form.
Aneke Rune, Holger Rune’s mother, has revealed that he suffered a back injury in Rome and that it worsened in the French Open as he was swaying a lot during his serves. As a result, Holger Rune now has a bulging disc in his spine, which is causing him a lot of pain and inflammation.
“It hurts every time he goes for a serve, and large doses of ibuprofen haven’t had an effect,” Aneke said to TV 2 Sport. She also said that the Danish player is using large doses of Ibuprofen. Although they are not having any side effects, Rune does not want to continue using them as they are not helping much anyway.
Holger Rune’s coach, Lars Christensen, has changed his serve to ease his back pain temporarily. Rune currently takes an injection into his back to treat the inflammation but he needs to address the issue immediately so that he can finish the season and return to his best. Thankfully, this injury should not pose any long-term threat to the player.

Holger Rune suffers yet another defeat in the Davis Cup

Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro defeated Holger Rune 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 in the first match of the Davis Cup’s World Group 1 first round match between Denmark and Brazil. Thanks to Monteiro’s win, Brazil got off to a strong start and ended up winning the tie 3-1.
This was Rune’s seventh consecutive loss in major tournaments and shows that he needs to treat his injury as soon as possible in order to return to the top of his game. Due to his injury, Rune’s participation in the 2023 Laver Cup is also in doubt.
