When Hubert Hurkacz was a child, Roger Federer was his idol and he hoped to play the Swiss maestro one day at the Wimbledon Championships. Ahead of the event at SW19 this year, Hurkacz recalled meeting with Federer in the 2021 Wimbledon quarterfinals, which ended up being the Swiss legend’s last professional match.

In that match, Hurkacz emerged victorious in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6, 6-0. The Pole, though he fulfilled his dream of facing Federer, doesn’t want to be remembered as just a player who defeated Federer in his last match as he is hoping to achieve a big title in the future. However, he admitted that he never experienced playing in such an electrifying atmosphere.

He has won so many times at Wimbledon and to have the chance to play with him on this unique court was something I always wanted to do. I hope I can do good things in the future and that I will be remembered for something other than my victory against Roger. But it was really special to play on Center Court with Roger, just to feel the atmosphere. It was very noisy.
Hubert Hurkacz told The Guardian

Federer was dealing with a knee problem during that Wimbledon and it was difficult for him to play to his full potential. A year later, he retired after participating in the Laver Cup after playing a doubles match with Rafael Nadal.

Hubert Hurkacz loves to play on grass

During that same interview with The Guardian, Hubert Hurkacz admitted that grass courts are his favorite, and he always looks forward to playing at Wimbledon. At the SW19, the Pole has made it to the semifinals just once, which came in 2021 after that quarterfinal win over Roger Federer

Grass is definitely my favorite surface. In Poland, we didn’t have any grass. We have maybe a few private courts, but I wouldn’t compare them to Wimbledon grass.

Earlier this week, the 27-year-old played the final at the Halle Open losing to World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in straight sets 7-6(10-8), 7-6(7-2). At Roland Garros prior to the Halle Open, Hurkacz reached the fourth round where Grigor Dimitrov beat him in straight sets.

The World No.7 has lifted eight career singles titles after turning pro in 2015. His best performance at a Grand Slam event was the 2021 Wimbledon semifinals followed by the 2024 Australian Open quarterfinals.
