‘The best tennis I ever played’: Hubert Hurkacz after his ATP Miami Open 2021 triumph

Arms raised in the air and fist pumped Hubert Hurkacz had done it. He had won his first ATP 1000 trophy, the Miami Open 2021. As he went to console his friend ,the teenager Jannik Sinner, you could see Hurkacz was feeling for him too. But this moment was for Hubert Hurkacz, his family and friends, his coaching and support staff, his fans in Poland and beyond. 

Hurkacz had to overcome a lot of hurdles to even get to the Finals of this Masters 1000 event. Among the seeded opponents, Hurkacz overcame the sixth seed Denis Shapovalov in the round of thirty-two. Then he overcame the twelfth seed Milos Raonic in the round of sixteen.

In the Quarter-finals he successfully took on the second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas and beat him, coming back from a set down, 2-6 6-3 6-4. In the Semi-finals he defeated the Russian fourth seed Andrey Rublev 6-3 6-4. Once in the Final he won in straight sets, beating Jannik Sinner 7-6, 6-4.

After the Finals, Hurkacz was ecstatic, as was expected. He said this was his best tournament win ever and he will get a lot of confidence from this win. He also disclosed that he had worked very hard for this win, worked extensively with his coach, and this was the best tennis he has played.

Hurkacz said that his mantra of improving each day is the reason why he won the tournament. Hurkacz said, I play the best tennis I ever played. I was solid all the tournament. We worked hard for it with my coach.

He continued, “It’s a huge tournament for me, my best title ever. Winning a tournament like this gives extra-confidence. “Hurkacz concluded, “I try to improve each day. This tournament is the result of that.”
