After almost two years, Hulk Hogan appeared on WWE programming at the Raw Netflix premiere. Hogan came out to put over his beer brand, Real American Beer’s partnership with WWE. However, the Intuit Dome audience in Los Angeles was having none of that. The crowd pelted Hogan with boos as the legendary wrestler tried to cater to them. While WWE may or may not have expected it, it ended up grabbing headlines. Recently, Eric Bischoff provided his own thoughts on the segment.
While speaking on his 83 Weeks podcast, Bischoff alluded to the city and state in which Raw took place. According to the ex-general manager, the ‘liberal’ and Democratic Los Angeles crowd played a massive role in the negative reaction. After all, Hogan had publicly voiced his support for Donald Trump during the elections. Eric Bischoff believes that Hogan’s association with Trump turned the crowd against The Hulkster.
For those unversed, Hogan had endorsed Trump multiple times, even delivering a passionate speech at the Republican National Convention. In fact, there were rumors of the former WWE Champion possibly joining Trump’s administration following the latter’s election win.
While Bischoff attributed the reaction to politics, it is unlikely that was the reason. Earlier in the night, The Undertaker, who also advocated for Trump during the elections, was met with cheers. The backlash to Hogan showing up can instead be due to several other reasons, which have accumulated over the years.
Why Hulk Hogan’s political association had nothing to do with the negative reaction
Without a doubt, Hulk Hogan is one of the most iconic and important figures in WWE history. However, Hogan hasn’t done the greatest of jobs in maintaining his ‘clean’ reputation. During his peak, The Hulkster not only made a lot of enemies on camera but also off-screen.
Several wrestling personalities have shared stories about Hogan’s backstage behavior and power. If that wasn’t enough to ruin his image, Hogan’s taped racist rant certainly changed fans’ perspective. In the leaked tape, the former WWE Champion blurted out several slurs, even admitting that he was “racist to a point.”
Despite facing significant backlash at the time, Hogan was seemingly unapologetic about his remarks. That might’ve been the final nail in the coffin, as wrestling fans haven’t always given the most welcoming of receptions to him since then.
