French skipper Kylian Mbappe humbly labeled his Euro 2024 campaign as a ‘failure’, following the team’s 2-1 defeat to Spain in the semi-finals. This loss eliminated France from the tournament, which they haven’t won since 2000.

The 25-year-old forward, who recently joined Real Madrid in a highly anticipated transfer, assisted his teammate Randal Kolo Muani to give France an early lead. However, Spain responded with goals from Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo to reach the final. The European Championship was disappointing for the French, who scored only one goal from open play. Mbappe himself finished with just one goal, a penalty against Poland.

Addressing reporters following France’s semi-final exit, Mbappe acknowledged the tournament as a disappointment, falling short of the team’s goal to win. He emphasized the importance of learning from setbacks and moving forward. The Frenchman mentioned the need for rest after a long year and stressed the importance of a strong return following the summer break. Additionally, the former PSG forward broke his nose in France’s first match against Austria.

In addition to Kylian Mbappe, several veteran French stars faced criticism, including Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann. Despite being a regular starter, the forward was left out of the starting lineup against Spain.

Speaking to reporters after the match, the Frenchman admitted they weren’t good enough to reach the final. He conceded that Spain performed better and deserved their victory. Additionally, the Los Blancos star mentioned a missed opportunity during the match.

We didn't do enough to get to the final. They (Spain) played better than us, they deserved to go to the final and we are going home.
