Carlos Alcaraz scripted history when he defeated Casper Ruud in the finals of the 2022 Miami Masters. The title made him the youngest champion in Miami Masters and the third-youngest man to win a Masters-1000 tier competition. While both Ruud and Alcaraz were playing their first Masters finals, it was Casper’s day to taste the success.

After a fierce first set where Alcaraz came back to win the set 7-5 having been 0-3 down at one point, the second set was played out much better by the teenager. Having taken a good lead, Casper tried an attempt to make a comeback of his own but a fitness issue that required medical assistance on the sidelines was the final nail in the coffin for the 23-year old Norwegian who will have to wait for his Masters title.

It has been a fantastic season so far for Alcaraz. Coming into the season with an ATP-250 title won in Croatia last season on Clay, expectations were quite high from the teen who reached the quarter-finals in the 2021 US Open as well and won the ATP NextGen title too. After a 3rd round exit in the 2022 Australian Open, Alcaraz went on to capture the ATP-500 title at the 2022 Rio Open, which saw him become the youngest to break into the Top-20.

“I am achieving very difficult things like winning here at Miami and previously at Rio, two incredible tournaments where great players are also competing. The fact that I won them, it gave me extra motivation. At the start of the year, I said I wanted to finish among the top 15 and now I am the world number 11.

“I wanted to win an ATP 500 and I did it, then I wanted to win an ATP 1000 and I did it too. I am not afraid to say that I want to win a Grand Slam. I know it is going to be a difficult path because you are playing against the best players in the world during two weeks, but I am not afraid I will try to win a Grand Slam,” said Alcaraz addressing the press after his win in Miami.

Can Carlos Alcaraz claim the 2022 French Open title?

With his exploits in the past few months, Alcaraz is quickly becoming the horse to put your money on for the 2022 French Open title. He made his main-draw debut at the Grand Slam last year reaching the 3rd round having started as a qualifier. He had earlier lost in the first round of the qualifiers in 2020.

With Daniil Medvedev most probably out from the Slam and Rafael Nadal believed to be not fully fit, Carlos can indeed have a good run at the Roland Garros this year. While he has far more experienced players to compete against, he has shown that he can take down the best of the best and can certainly be a contender. However, the title could be a very long shot for the teenager but given how he has risen on the Tour, he could certainly be a massive challenger for the title.
