“I changed my technique but nothing went my way in IPL 2020,” says Andre Russell

West Indies’ all-rounder Andre Russell had an Indian Premier League (IPL) season to forget in 2020 as he couldn’t deliver on the high expectations that he is usually associated with. After taking the tournament by storm in 2018 and 2019 with his finishing abilities in close matches, he was expected to be his side Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) go-to player yet again. However, a return of just 117 runs and 6 wickets in 10 matches was dismal for the Jamaican to say the least.
After suffering from a few injury problems during the course of the season, Russell never got going in the tournament which was held in the UAE. He struggled to connect deliveries and ended up losing his wicket cheaply. His failure mirrored his team’s failure to reach the playoffs as they threw away a good start in the tournament to finish outside the top 4 spots.
‘The pressure was real’ – Andre Russell

Andre Russell spoke about his failure in the IPL 2020 while speaking to Jamaican TV channel SportsMax and said, “I changed my stance, I changed my technique, I changed my trigger movement, all these things I changed just to score runs in IPL, and nothing was going my way. The pressure was real. I’m a tough player, and I didn’t know I could actually feel what happened during this year’s IPL. And I just wanted everything to go quickly behind me.”
“I get out of the bubble. I go to Dubai, have a good time, drink, party, loosen myself. I feel alive. When you feel like you’re coming out of prison, it’s like I’ve never been to prison, but this lockdown actually felt like, ‘oh my god, I can’t do whatever I want to do,” Russell said when asked about the bio-secure bubbles and the impact they had.
Russell is now turning up for the Colombo Kings in the Lanka Premier League 2020.
