“I didn’t expect it” – T Natarajan recalls the moment when ‘legend’ Virat Kohli handed over T20 series trophy to him

T Natarajan

T Natarajan had arguably the most remarkable tour of Australia among all Indian players. From being chosen as a net bowler to making his debut in all three formats and becoming the first Indian to do so, the tour was a life-chasing one for the left-arm pacer. On the back of his excellent performances in the 2020 edition of the IPL, Natarajan was chosen as a net bowler for the limited-overs series.
However, an injury to fellow Tamil Nadu star who had received his first call-up, Varun Chakravarthy meant he was drafted into the squad for the T20s before being included in the ODI squad as cover for Navdeep Saini. He went on to make his debut in both formats and impressed with his excellent display of bowling.
He then made his debut in Tests as injuries to a plethora of India’s pacers meant he had to be picked. He picked up 3 wickets in the first innings and removed a well-set Marnus Labuschagne to ensure his first Test outing was a success as well.
‘It was an unforgettable experience in my life’ – T Natarajan

T Natarajan spoke to Cricbuzz about the surreal feeling of playing for his nation and recalled moments from the series. He said, “I was suddenly given an opportunity – I didn’t expect to make my one-day debut there [Canberra]. Suddenly they [the management] told me that I would be playing and that was pressure for me. But I wanted to make the best use of this opportunity, so I shifted my focus to that. That [first] wicket and everything that followed seems like a dream to me.’
“I never expected it. I didn’t expect Virat Kohli to come over and hand the trophy to me; I was just standing on the side. I teared up. When a legend like Kohli came in and gave the trophy over to me it was a great feeling – I can’t describe it. It was obviously quite difficult [missing the birth of my child], yes. But, for my wife and my family, me representing the country gave them greater happiness. I never expected to get this kind of reception. I have to thank the people in my village,” Natarajan added.
“It was an unforgettable experience in my life and I dreamt of making it big, hoping to bring recognition to Salem. It’s all god’s grace, and I’m so happy right now. There’s no limit to it and I just can’t describe that feeling. I just feel like being selected for the Australia tour was a gift for me,” he signed off.
