Amen Thompson details Kobe Bryant-esque feelings after game winner
The Houston Rockets are the breakout NBA team of the year. They have been on an absolute tear of late, and they put it on display Monday night when they beat the reigning champions, Boston Celtics, in the final seconds of the game. At the heart of their victory was the sophomore sensation Amen Thompson, who scored the game-winning shot to tip the Rockets over the edge.
As the game wound to a close, the scoreboard was tied at 112-112. Thompson received the inbounds with just under 5 seconds to go and attacked the rim to convert a floater with just 0.7s left on the game clock. As the Rockets celebrated their win, Amen Thompson and Dillon Brooks gave their postgame reactions during their on-court interview, with Thompson revealing his Kobe Bryant-esque feelings.
“That’s my first game-winner. I feel like Kobe,” Thompson told the Rockets broadcast.

Following his game-winner, Thompson was certainly on cloud nine as he detailed how he knew the shot was going in the moment it left his fingers. Hyping up the 21-year-old in the postgame interview was Dillon Brooks, who tied the franchise record for most three-pointers made in a game by a Rockets player, shooting 10-15 from beyond the arc and scoring a game-high 36 points.
Thompson not only sank the game-winning shot to take the Rockets over the edge, but he also scored a career-high in points while doing so. Amen Thompson ended the game with 33 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists on 13-19 shooting from the field, including a steal and a block. He was one of the primary catalysts for the Rockets’ victory, causing chaos on both ends of the floor for the Celtics.
Amen Thompson is taking the leap to stardom
Monday night’s performance was not an anomaly for Amen Thompson. The 4th overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft has been a terror on both ends of the floor for opposing teams. The Rockets have excelled over the last month, winning 8 of their last 10 games, and a major reason for that has been Coach Ime Udoka’s decision to insert the 21-year-old athletic freak into the starting lineup for the Rockets.
Since entering the starting lineup for the Rockets, Thompson has been on a tear averaging 19.2 points, 11.5 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.2 steals per game during that stretch. His career high on Monday came right after the Rockets had wrapped up back-to-back close victories against the Eastern Conference-leading Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday.
In that game, Amen Thompson recorded his second career triple-double with 23 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists. He has been a standout for the Rockets during their recent stretch of wins, and his performance has been a large reason for the Rockets’ 31-14 record after Monday night. They have now moved into the 2nd seed in the West, trailing only the OKC Thunder with a 37-8 record.
