“I felt it” – Simon Halep says that the ‘courts are faster’ after win at WTA 500 Melbourne
With the Australia Open 2021 just about a week away, the WTA is conducting a plethora of tournaments for the players to get in shape and touch ahead of the big event. One of these events is the WTA 500 Melbourne which is currently ongoing. World No. 2 Simona Halep got off to a perfect start today when she defeated Anastasia Potapova in straight sets in her first round match with a score of 6-4, 6-4.
The win is the perfect platform for Halep to continue her form and get her hands on the Australian Open title soon. She beat World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty recently as well in an exhibition match in Adelaide. In her post-match interview, Halep was asked the question as to whether the courts in Melbourne were faster and she replied in the affirmative.
‘Yeah it’s a little bit faster’ – Halep
“Yeah, it’s a little bit faster, I felt it,” began Halep. “But all this stuff against big hitters, so all the courts feel like faster when you play against them. But it was a nice atmosphere.” The reason for the question was that experts had recently pointed out that the courts were made faster this year in Melbourne. Halep has now stated the same and hence, it is expected to be felt by all players in Melbourne.
There were some fans who attended Halep’s match and the Romanian thanked them for coming saying, “It’s really nice to see people cheering for us. So, thank you, everyone, for coming. I missed the crowd last year and it’s nice to see some people back.”
