“I find that stupid” – Gilles Cervara on Daniil Medvedev’s ‘celebration shrug’

After an initial disappointing start, the World No.4, Daniil Medvedev went on to claim two of the greatest titles of the season. The Russian won Paris Masters and the Nitto ATP Finals consecutively, and concluded 2020 with a bang. Further, he became the first player to oust the Top-3 in the world at the ATP Finals in the same year.

One would think this would warrant a powerful outburst of emotion. Rather, Medvedev followed through his claim of, “everyone wanted a new thing, so I’m giving them a new thing.” After downing Dominic Thiem in the final 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, the Russian proceeded to shrug whilst giving a look to his coach, Gilles Cervara

In an interview with Winamax, Cervara expressed his views on Medvedev’s dialled down celebrations.

“I find that stupid, but it’s him and so there is nothing else to say. It’s his way of celebrating,” he stated.

In addition, the Russian ousted all-time greats Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, the latter of whom he defeated for the first time in his career. Even so, Cervara seems to understand and accept the individual that his mentee is.

Further, Cervara mentioned that while he wanted to express his joy over the massive feats, he couldn’t do so because Daniil didn’t outwardly reciprocate these emotions. This aligns with Medvedev’s recent statement wherein he declared that he knew Gilles was ecstatic, but couldn’t demonstrate it. Even though the duo are quite conservative with reactions post-huge wins, the graph for Medvedev’s career only seems to have an upward slope.
