Patrick Mouratoglou is one the most influential coaches in tennis history. He has been a part of the 23-time Grand Slam champion, Serena William’s camp since 2012. Currently, he coaches up-and-coming players Stefanos Tsitsipas and Coco Gauff as well.
The Frenchman is known around the ATP and the WTA tour for being a proficient tactician. He deciphers the puzzle that other players pose. This allows his own wards, i.e, Williams, Gauff and Tsitsipas to have an upper hand in the matches.
In the Netflix series, ‘Playbook,’ Mouratoglou revealed the hoops he jumped through to become the ace coach that he is.
How Mouratolgou designs the tactics for his wards
As a youngster, Patrick had difficulties connecting with other individuals. This gave way to him becoming more observant and comprehending things from others’ body language. Hence, now, the top-coach has a keen eye for detail.
“I didn’t know that I was learning my job when I was a kid. I did it to survive, but this ability to read people became my biggest strength,” he stated. To aid his players, Mouratoglou observes the body language of the competition and gets “so much information, and they don’t even know it.”
Further, with the information he garners, Patrick “starts to make a plan.” Moreover, the Frenchman disclosed that he wrote down every detail pertaining to the match taking place. He added, “I write down a lot of things. I have a lot, because I think it is incredibly important. We think we’re not going to forget, but we forget everything. I want to remember the story of the match.”
This style engrained in Patrick has definitely proven beneficial for Williams thus far. She has claimed 10 Grand Slam titles under his guidance.
