‘I knew we would bounce back’: Thomas Tuchel is pleased with Chelsea’s emphatic victory

Chelsea vs FC Porto

Chelsea travelled to Sevilla to face FC Porto in the UEFA Champions League quarter finals stage. The Blues successfully managed to defeat the Portuguese side 2-0 and will take a healthy two goal advantage going into the second leg.

For the Blues Mason Mount opened the scoring with a piece of individual brilliance. Deep into the second half Ben Chilwell pinched the ball of Jesus Corona to score the second.

Thomas Tuchel’s assessment of the match

After a humbling defeat at the hands of West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League, Chelsea would definitely have been nervous going into the match. Albion exposed a lot of weak points but Chelsea did well to recuperate immediately from the loss.

FC Porto definitely had chances in both halves but Chelsea were determined with their defence and didn’t lose concentration. Much credit has to be given to goalkeeper Eduoard Mendy who did very well again to keep a clean sheet.

German coach Thomas Tuchel is extremely pleased with his team’s efforts and says he knew they would produce a good display. Tuchel says the way his players reacted to the defeat against West Bromwich Albion guaranteed a positive response against Porto.

“I saw the response immediately after the game in the dressing room and the next day, it was not a big concern.

We had a big loss; it was our responsibility and we accepted it – me included. We were ready to respond, that is what we said, and this is it. There will always be setbacks in sport and the biggest challenge now was to bounce back.

We have had a lot of wins together, a lot of excellent results. We had a loss and now we have a reaction after a loss together, and that brings us closer and increases the trust. It was important to have a clean sheet and a win straight after that defeat.”
