Maria Sharapova is a five-time Grand Slam champion. She is one of only ten female athletes to have claimed the career slam. Following her retirement from the sport in the former half of the year, the Russian has poured herself into architectural and home design.

Most recently, the 33-year-old has given an insight into what drove her to pursue this stream. However, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Sharapova chose it. Since, even during her almost two-decade long career, she was lauded for her sense of style.

When Sharapova was younger, she “used to collect stamps.” Eventually, she grew out of the phase and “starting taking photographs of Frank-Kerry (fashion designers) buildings.” She found herself mesmerised by the “look and there was something so fresh and different about them.”

She added, “So I would take photos. Through those travels I just had this passion for design. Eight years ago, I built and designed my home, which was such a fine experience.”

Sharapova proceeded to state that while it can be very daunting for some people, she “loved the experience, the journey.”

The Russian has joined an architectural group with Dan Mayes. Herein, she’ll be designing hotels, fitness and wellness centres around the world.

“When you’re building something that you’re gonna feel, touch and live in for so many days a year, you wanna make it unique and special. And I loved that process,” she concluded.
