“I think he was lighter,” Brandon Moreno credits Deiveson Figueiredo’s swift weight cut for his victory at UFC 270
Brandon Moreno vs Deiveson Figueiredo
Former UFC Flyweight Champion Brandon Moreno might feel that the judges did him wrong by scoring the now champion Deiveson Figueiredo against him at UFC 270, regardless, he doesn’t have any excuses on top of it and seems excited to look out for the next fight. Moreno and Figueiredo went for a trilogy at UFC 270, a war, which went through all 5 rounds. Figueiredo defeated Moreno via unanimous decision.
In Anaheim, California, the location of UFC 270, the California Athletic Commission unlike any other commission is open to releasing the weight of athletes on the night of their fight. Just like for all the fighters, the weight of Moreno and Figueiredo was released along with their own weight difference between weigh-ins and the fight night.
The fans were surprised by the result. On the day of the weigh-in, both the fighters weighed the championship weight of 124 pounds. On the other hand, at the fight night, Moreno weighed 136.2 lbs, indicating a 12.2 lbs ie. 9.8% gain and Figueiredo weighed 143.2 lbs ie. 15.5% gain.
Brandon Moreno says Deiveson Figueiredo weighed close to 150 lbs in the two fights they fought before the trilogy
Moreno came for an interview at MMA Fighting‘s The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani to talk about various things associated with his fight with Figueiredo at UFC 270 and what’s next. He, therefore, reacted to the fight night weights of both him and Figueiredo.
“Yes, I felt like he is bigger than me,” says Moreno, “But man, I mean, I fought against him 3 times [now], it’s not a surprise for me. Actually, I think he was light maybe. The other ones [the first fight and the rematch], I felt him like 150 [lbs]. I understand maybe for the people it’s like ‘Wow, it’s amazing’ but to me, it’s like man, he’s getting that weight because he is big,” Moreno concluded affirming it was no big deal.
What do you make of Moreno’s way of brushing off the weight advantage in favour of Figueiredo? Do you think fighters should weigh to such an extent on the night of their fight? Who do you think will win the fourth fight between Moreno and Figueiredo? Do you think the fourth fight is bound to happen next or will it take time?
