Kamaru Usman took his former teammate Gilbert Burns on a nightmarish ride, as he knocked Burns out in the third round in the main event of UFC 258. After a bright start to the fight, catching Usman cold, with a couple of big hands, Burns seemed to be in control for a while. But, Usman proved to be too strong, and the Nigerian’s jabs stole the show. Gilbert Burns was left teary-eyed after the defeat, but he has vowed to bounce back stronger.

Speaking at the post-fight press conference, Burns revealed that he got a bit overexcited, drawing comparisons to his loss against Dan Hooker, back in 2018. He also divulged that he would bounce back just like ‘Robbie Lawler’ did, at one point in his career.

If I want to become a champion I cannot make those mistakes

Gilbert Burns was quoted as saying, “I think I got overexcited. I got overexcited then (referencing his loss to Dan Hooker back in 2018) . If I want to become a champion I cannot make those mistakes. But like the way I see it right now, I just want to be like Robbie Lawler. You know, he was the only guy if I’m not wrong that lost to Johny Hendricks and then just came right back. Got a couple of wins and became a champion. That is exactly what I am going to do.”

Despite the loss, Burns, stills lies very much in the title contention. There are a few names viz. Colby Covington, Jorge Masvidal; Burns is yet to face. He might probably get a shot at the title, if he clears out the names below him.
