‘I think you should wait to fight Povetkin’ – Eddie Hearn wants Dillian Whyte to wait for Alexander Povetkin
Dillian Whyte

Dillian Whyte last fought Alexander Povetkin, this August and succumbed to a fifth round TKO in his own backyard, against the Russian. In the aftermath of his defeat, Whyte then, triggered his rematch clause, setting up a fight again on the 21st of November. But, unfortunately, the Russian was hospitalized due to COVID-19 and the fight was pushed to the 30th of January, next year. Of late, the possibility of the fight taking place on the 30th January seems to be bleak, as Alexander Povetkin is still recovering from the effects of the Coronavirus.

Speaking about this to Sky Sports, Eddie Hearn, Whyte’s promoter and Matchroom Boxing CEO said that a search was on for a new opponent, but also advised Whyte to wait for Alexander Povetkin.

I really feel that Dillian needs to wipe that defeat off his record against Povetkin” – Eddie Hearn

Eddie Hearn was quoted as saying, “We will be reaching out to other players in the heavyweight division to see if they fancy it. I’d love to make Ruiz Jr vs Whyte, Wilder vs Whyte, Ortiz vs Whyte. Chisora is always ready. He is another name to throw in the mix, potentially, for Whyte if the Povetkin fight is delayed. He is always in excellent fights, always entertaining, he is on good form. But I really feel that Dillian needs to wipe that [defeat] off his record against Povetkin.” [via Sky Sports]

Eddie Hearn also said that he had asked Whyte to wait for the Povetkin rematch, as the former has a burning desire to avenge his loss. Speaking of which, Eddie said, “That fight was planned for January 30 and previously November 21. Povetkin does need more time recovering from Covid but not too long. We expect him to have a four-week delay. When I conveyed that news to Whyte it didn’t go down very well! His first question was: ‘Who else can we fight? Can we fight Luis Ortiz, Deontay Wilder, Andy Ruiz Jr?’ The answer is: ‘Yes any of those would be fantastic’. But he does want, more than anything, to avenge the defeat that he suffered at the hands of Povetkin. That is on his mind. So I said to him: ‘I think you should wait [to fight Povetkin]’.” [via Sky Sports]

Who do you think Dillian Whyte should be fighting next? Should he wait for the Povetkin fight, as Eddie Hearn suggests?
