“I try to make my opponent crazy,” Daniil Medvedev reflects on his win over Alexander Zverev in the Paris Masters final
Daniil Medvedev downed World No.7 Alexander Zverev in a thrilling Paris Masters 2020 final yesterday. After Karen Khachanov, he became the second Russian in 3 years to lay claim to this title.
The 24-year-old engaged in a high-quality battle with Zverev and sealed the victory in impressive fashion. From the onset of the first set, the duo put their best foot forward and barely committed any unforced errors. This set went Sascha’s way. However, Daniil lifted his form even higher while as the match progressed and turned the final around with the score reflecting 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.
Medvedev had struggled this season quite a lot. He faced early-round defeats in almost every tournament apart from the U.S Open. However, this Russian machine stayed calm and composed throughout the entirety of this topsy-turvy match to bag his best result of the season yet.
Medvedev’s toil reels in the results
Daniil captured his third ATP Masters 1000 title yesterday. In his post-match prfess conference, he explained the mental and physical work he’d put in himself to reach a favourable position.
“I‘ve been working on my mental strength for a long time. Have done a lot of progress, because even if you see me still doing meltdowns, it’s nothing compared to what I was when I was a junior. Worked a lot on it, and I’m really happy with how I’m performing with my mental strength many times,” he said.
Further, the Russian stated that he was very joyous with the result in Paris. He stated that he was “fighting like an animal” early in the third set to garner a lead over his adversary. Reflecting on the variety of plays that he used in the final, he said, “I’m really trying to make my opponent crazy.”
After a wondrous week in Paris, Medvedev got a head start before the commencement of the Nitto ATP Finals. He was 0-3 in the win-loss record at the tournament last year. Further, the Rusian will hopefully succeed to capitalize on the momentum he’s built.
