The sadness knew no bounds for the fight fans when the trilogy fight between current UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski and the preceding champion Max Holloway at UFC 272 was cancelled right after a day into its announcement. This fight was certain to happen considering the performances from both the fighters up till now since their rematch back in 2020. After this, not only did Volkanovski get a new opponent, but a new fight card to fight on as well.
However, after a time of matchmaking by the UFC and a number of fighters calling out Volkanovski for the vacant title shot, he will now face Chan Sung Jung aka the Korean Zombie at UFC 273 in April 2022. Along with this fight, the rematch between undisputed bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling and interim champion Petr Yan has also been pushed from UFC 272 to this fight card as well.
Alexander Volkanovski quotes Max Holloway’s famous lines to make peace with the cancellation of fight
Volkanovski recently came out to answer all the questions leading up to the announcement and cancellation of the trilogy fight with Holloway and then to the announcement of a new opponent, via his interview at MMA Fighting‘s The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani. Just like the fight fans’, Volkanovski was left equally surprised and a bit held back.
“I was disappointed, you know… man I just, I was really looking forward to that fight…” said Volkanovski “…I was ready to get into camp, get things going and end that chapter and all that type of stuff but as ‘Blessed’ [Holloway] says, ‘It is what it is,’ it was unfortunate, a lot of people wanted to see it but what do you do, that [trilogy fight] will have to wait till later.“
For the certainty of the trilogy to stay intact in its happening, Volkanovski has to get past his opponent Jung at UFC 273 and Holloway has to recover as soon as possible.
