The 44 year old hailing from Chennai had a brief career in the international format though the classy spinner put up formidable performances before the selectors. He recently featured in a talk show conducted by ‘The Last wicket’ where the former spinner commented the standard of mentoring made by the legend Bishan Singh Bedi.

“I was very lucky to be brought under Bishan bedi who almost forced me to bowl in an attacking way even in a one-day situation. I still had to have a silly point and slip at all times.” said Murali Karthik in the video posted by “The Last Wicket”.

Bishan Singh dominated the international arena of red ball cricket scalping 266 wickets of 67 test matches by the end of his career. Murali Karthik found a perfect idol for himself as the legend was bowling of the same left arm leg spin bowling style.

“I still had to have my people close in somewhere I can’t throw people back and also we had captains who were of attacking mindset because the cricket was played in a certain way and that’s how it was and now things have changed and with that so as the quality dropped drastically so if you ask me do we have that kind of spinners which we had, no. It’s only been going down”

The former leggie commented that the standard of spin bowling has been drastically reducing in India as spinner are making it to the limited over formats but they are not intending towards representing India in red ball formats. Murali Karthik feels that that the quality of spinners for the red ball format is currently not at it’s epitome and there is a real necessity of spinners targeting towards the Test Format.

“You might bowl economically you might do a great job for your captain, you might bowl with long on, long off deep mid wicket that is fine but to bowl with mid on mid off up, to have fielders close by that requires skill, that requires consistency, that requires hours of practice to own those skills and then you test yourself out. I think that is not there at the moment.”
