West Indies icon Ian Bishop went out of the way to share a heartwarming moment with Nepal captain Rohit Paudel, after the team’s historic T20I series win over the Caribbean nation. Nepal outclassed the former world champions, defeating them in the second T20I of a three-match series.

This triumph marked several historic firsts for the small Asian cricketing nation. First, Nepal recorded both its first match and its first series victory over an ICC Test-playing nation. Second, the Rohit Paudel-led side also secured became the first associate member team to claim a T20I series victory over a full-member side, significantly boosting their potential to secure a spot at the upcoming 2026 T20 World Cup.

Nepal had already won the first T20I against the struggling West Indies side by a margin of 19 runs, with skipper Rohit Paudel claiming the POTM award. In the second T20I in Sharjah, the Asian side once again opted to bat first, putting up a formidable first innings score of 173/6 on the board. Opener Aasif Sheikh top-scored with 68 runs off 47 deliveries, while Sundeep Jora supported him with a 63-run innings.

West Indies, in response, faltered once more, as they were bowled out for just 83 runs, losing the match by a huge margin of 90 runs. Fast-bowling all-rounder Mohammad Aadil Alam finished with remarkable figures of 4/24 in his four-over spell, while the experienced Kushal Bhurtel picked up three wickets in just 2.1 overs. Dipendra Singh Airee, Karan KC, and Lalit Rajbanshi all claimed a wicket each.

With the series deservingly in Nepal’s grasp, captain Rohit Paudel shared a heartwarming moment with West Indies legend Ian Bishop during the post-match presentation. Bishop congratulated the Nepali team for its victory, and singled out captain Rohit Paudel as an ‘extremely good leader’.

The legendary West Indies bowler suggested that Nepal needed the win to boost their chances of making it further ahead, despite his home country having suffered one its worst T20I defeats. Bishop during the post-match presentation ceremony:

I don’t usually do this. But I know that the country needs this, the team needs this. Rohit [Paudel], very, very well done. For a young man, you are an extremely good leader.

While Nepal will be beaming with confidence after the historic series triumph, West Indies will need to change course after reaching an alarming low over the past few years. Windies have now won just one of the four T20I series they have played this year, having lost the other three.

Alzarri Joseph’s Injury Puts West Indies in Major Huddle for India Tests

Once the T20I series against Nepal comes to an end, the West Indies red-ball side would be ready to face its next big opponent, India, in a two-match Test series away from home. To add to the team’s woes, ace pacer Alzarri Joseph has now been ruled out of the tour to India, due to a lower-back injury.

With Alzarri Joseph out, West Indies will now have to rely on Jayden Seales on the challenging surfaces. Joseph had complained of discomfort during a training session, with scans revealing ‘a degeneration of a previously resolved lower-back injury’. Initially, former captain Jason Holder was asked to replace Alzarri Joseph, but the 33-year-old all-rounder declined to do so, citing a planned medical procedure.

With Holder having refused to join the Test squad, West Indies have now roped in left-arm seamer Jediah Blades to replace Joseph for the two Tests against India. While the 23-year-old is no match to Joseph’s presence in the West Indies side, he does boast an impressive first-class record, having picked up 35 wickets in 13 matches at an average of 35.91. He has featured in three ODIs and five T20Is, so far.

Alzarri Joseph’s injury was not the only blow that the West Indies red-ball team suffered, with Shamar Joseph also being ruled out last week. Shamar has been replaced by all-rounder Johann Layne, with Seales, Anderson Phillip and Justin Greaves being the remaining fast-bowling options.
