The COVID-19 situation in India is getting worse by the day. As many as 3 lakh positive cases and more are being reported and there are acute problems facing the country such as the shortage of oxygen supplies. The entire conditions prevailing in the nation are ones of dire uncertainty. During these times, the only major sport that is being played in the form of an international tournament is the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Even in the same, a few overseas players like Kane Richardson, Adam Zampa and Andrew Tye have left the country due to anxiety over the prevalent situation. India’s Ravichandran Ashwin also decided to ‘take a break’ and be with his family. With there being a cloud of concern over the IPL, a plethora of experts and cricketers are now questioning as to how the ICC T20 World Cup which is scheduled for later this year in India would take place.
Ian Chappell questions the conduct of T20 World Cup in India
Former Australian cricket has now question as to how it would be possible to conduct the upcoming T20 World Cup in India. He told Australian news organization Nine about the same saying, “You wouldn’t think so, with the individuals you can understand why some of them are happy to go to the IPL, but I just can’t imagine that too many of the countries would be happy to go.”
“I just can’t see how it would work, particularly if any of the players who are currently at the IPL have difficulty getting home. It would be a matter of common sense not prevailing if it went ahead in India. Paul Keating once said to always back self-interest because you know it’s a goer, and you could substitute financial-interest in this case,” he added.
“And that doesn’t apply just to cricket administrators, the money that’s been outlayed can be the only reason why the Olympics is still going ahead. But, logic would tell you that the T20 World Cup can’t go ahead in India,” he further said.
The World Cup is scheduled for the month of October and it remains to be seen what decision the BCCI and ICC take with regard to hosting it in India.
