Ian Garry continues to make headlines as one of the UFC’s most talked-about rising stars. The Irish welterweight has consistently positioned himself as a future title contender. With his next appearance set for UFC Qatar on November 22, Garry’s growing presence in the sport is once again capturing attention, particularly as he faces one of the division’s most experienced fighters in Belal Muhammad.
Garry finally got the Muhammad fight after challenging ‘Bully B’ multiple times. The Irishman was on a clear path for title contention with wins over the likes of Geoff Neal, Michael Page, and Neil Magny. However, his demolition course was halted by a loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310.
Despite the setback, Garry managed to defeat Carlos Prates in April at UFC Kansas on short notice to get back in the win column. Muhammad, on the other hand, is returning to the Octagon after his title loss to Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 315.
Known for his grapple-heavy style, the Chicago fighter was often criticized for putting up ‘boring fights’ and winning via decision. Garry’s striking precision and movement have defined his rise, which begs the question of how their fight may play out. The Irish star recently cleared that doubt in a post on X.
No this won’t go to a decision in a million years.

Garry’s promise not to let the Muhammad fight go the distance is controversial, as his last five fights have all ended in a decision. The Irishman’s last knockout victory was against Daniel Rodriguez back in 2023. Ever since then, ‘Machado’ has been dominating his opponents but has failed to produce a finish, and Muhammad’s high-level, wrestle-heavy approach may be problematic for Garry.
The former 170lbs kingpin also enters the bout with years of experience against top-ranked opponents. His consistency and strategic approach have helped him maintain a position at the top of the rankings. The fight in Qatar presents him with another opportunity to solidify his claim for a second championship shot, especially against a younger, faster opponent like Garry, who is eager to break through.
As both welterweights prepare for the matchup, the stakes remain high. For Garry, a statement win could cement his status as a title challenger. At the same time, Muhammad looks to reassert his position as a veteran capable of halting the division’s momentum-driven prospects. Their clash may prove to be a vital turning point for the stacked 170-pound division.
Ian Garry debates the Shavkat Rakhmonov loss at UFC 310
Ian Garry’s bout against Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310 remains one of the most discussed moments of his career, marking the first professional setback in his otherwise perfect record. Despite Rakhmonov earning the victory, the contest showcased Garry’s resilience and ability to stand toe-to-toe with one of the most dangerous finishers in the sport.

During the contest, Garry caught Rakhmonov in a dangerous rear-naked choke in the final round that momentarily shifted the momentum of the fight. The sequence highlighted Garry’s grappling awareness and composure under pressure, as he came close to securing a potential finish before Rakhmonov managed to escape. The Irishman recently spoke about how the fight played out in his mind in an interview with UFC.
The ego in me doesn’t like to admit that my hand never got raised. I still feel like, to this day, I didn’t lose that fight. He was gasping for air, grateful the fight was over. I was ready for more.

Since that clash, Garry has used the experience as fuel for his ongoing rise in the welterweight rankings, as demonstrated in his fight against Prates. While the Rakhmonov fight ended his unbeaten streak, it also solidified his reputation as a relentless competitor who remains determined to prove that the result did not define his ceiling within the UFC.
