Ian Garry may have lost at UFC 330, but his performance against Islam Makhachev earned widespread respect. The Irishman gave Makhachev one of the toughest fights of his career during their clash. However, the unanimous decision defeat also ended Garry’s longstanding pursuit of the UFC welterweight championship.

Garry delivered an impressive performance against the Dagestani champion throughout their five-round UFC 330 championship fight. The Irish challenger remained competitive despite Makhachev’s dominant wrestling, consistently defending positions and threatening during striking exchanges.

What made Garry’s performance impressive was Makhachev’s dominance over several years. The champion entered UFC 330 as the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter and broke Anderson Silva’s record with his 17th UFC win. Garry embraced Makhachev after their fight at UFC 330. The Irishman has now released his first statement following the defeat.

I’m not in this world to live up to other people’s expectations. I’m here to live up to mine and I know what I could have done. I didn’t do it tonight and it’s only going to weigh on my conscious and my brain. So I just get back in the gym. We can keep doing what we’ve been doing. We get back in the octagon soon because there is nothing better than activity in this sport.

One of the biggest influences throughout Garry’s career has been Conor McGregor, who previously trained with him at SBG Ireland. The former UFC champion shares a strong relationship with his fellow Irishman and has continued supporting him. McGregor also recently praised Garry’s response to his UFC 330 loss.

Championship Mindset.

McGregor backed Garry before UFC 330, believing the Irishman had the tools to overcome Makhachev. He highlighted Garry’s work at SBG, physical advantages, and ability to keep the champion at range. The support carried added significance as McGregor openly predicted Garry would pull off the upset in Philadelphia.

Garry had set an ambitious benchmark involving McGregor before UFC 330, aiming to surpass the superstar’s impact. The welterweight contender believed beating Makhachev could help him eclipse McGregor’s superstardom. Garry’s ambition reflected his desire to become the UFC’s next major Irish star.

McGregor was not the only fighter to support Garry; Charles Oliveira also inspired the Irishman after UFC 330. Garry cited Oliveira’s career while explaining why the defeat did not affect him as much as expected. Oliveira had also trained with Garry before UFC 330, helping him prepare for Makhachev’s grappling.

UFC veteran reveals the real reason behind Ian Garry’s respectful nature at UFC 330

At UFC 330, Ian Garry faced the biggest challenge of his career against Islam Makhachev for the welterweight title. The Irish welterweight had earned the opportunity after defeating former champion Belal Muhammad by unanimous decision at UFC Qatar in November 2025.

At UFC 330, Garry showed respect for Makhachev, repeatedly shaking hands and embracing the champion between rounds. The challenger also acknowledged Makhachev throughout the fight before speaking positively with UFC media and Khabib Nurmagomedov afterward.

Garry’s demeanor did not sit well with UFC CEO Dana White, who questioned his urgency and “killer instinct” during the fight. Makhachev was also puzzled by Garry’s repeated embraces, which continued throughout their championship bout. UFC legend Chael Sonnen has now offered a different explanation.

Ian Garry doesn’t have a team. If push comes to shove, which let’s hope that it doesn’t, but if it does, Ian Garry knows who’s got his back, which is two coaches and no friends and no teammates. And I don’t know if there was that fear. I don’t know if there was a post like Khabib Conor moment that Ian was visualizing they’re all going to come in the cage and he has nobody to back him up.

The Makhachev-Garry matchup drew comparisons to Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor’s UFC 229 rivalry between Dagestan and Ireland. Nurmagomedov submitted McGregor in the fourth round, while their rivalry ended with a post-fight brawl. Sonnen’s explanation for Garry’s approach now offers a different perspective on the latest Dagestan-Ireland matchup.
