ICC announces qualification process for Women’s T20 World Cup 2023

A month after rescheduling the Women’s T20 World Cup, International Cricket Council (ICC) announces qualification schedule for the gala event. The World Cup was first slated to be held in late 2022. But was postponed to February 2023 to avoid a cluster of big-ticket events in 2022 and manage players’ workload. Hosts South Africa, the seven top teams on the ICC women’s T20I team rankings as of November 30, 2021. And the teams that competed in the Australia 2020 event qualify automatically for the 2023 edition.

A qualification process will determine the remaining two spots. And it will kick off at the regional level in August 2021 and includes 37 teams. This is an increase of ten teams from the 2020 qualifiers. And reflects the continued growth of bilateral women’s T20I cricket.

Eight teams to debut in ICC women’s competition

Eight teams will be making their debut in ICC women’s events through these qualifiers. Bhutan, Botswana, Cameroon, France, Malawi, Myanmar, Philippines and Turkey are the sides who will be playing their first ICC women’s event. The move comes in a bid to develop women’s cricket around the globe. The qualifiers will mark the return of Argentina and Brazil to ICC women’s competition for the first time since 2012.

The five regions will host a regional qualifying event with the top team from each region joining the bottom two ranked teams in the women’s T20I rankings (as of November 30, 2021) for the eight-team ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier. The highest-ranked team in the regional qualifiers on the November cut-off date, who missed out on topping their regional event table, will get a second chance. The side will fill the final spot of the qualifiers.
