ICC launches investigation into alleged match fixing in Lanka Premier League
The Lankan Premier League (LPL) has landed in trouble even before its inaugural game. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has received a complaint regarding an attempt to fix the matches of the league. LPL is expected to kick off from November 26 with the final taking place on December 16. The league will feature six franchises namely Colombo Kings, Dambulla Viiking, Galle Gladiators, Jaffna Stallions, and Kandy Tuskers fighting for the title.
The Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) of the global body has launched an investigation regarding the complaint. It is understood that the complaint states that a former national cricketer approached an LPL player to tamper with the results of the game. In the meantime, both the ICC and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) have been tight-lipped about the incident.
Tournament kicks off today
Last year, Sri Lanka had introduced a bunch of laws to curb corruption in the sport. The move came after then-sports minister Harin Fernando had revealed that ICC considered Lanka as the world’s most corrupt cricket nation. The controversy comes a day before SLC plans to host the inaugural match of the league. The first match will see Angelo Mathews led Colombo Kings take on Kusal Perera‘s Kandy Tuskers. The opening game will feature big names like Andre Russell, Isuru Udana, Irfan Pathan and Dale Steyn.
LPL was postponed quite a times in the past months owing to the ongoing pandemic. The deadly virus has claimed 94 lives and infected nearly 21,000 people in the Island nation.
