ICC names Ravichandran Ashwin as Player of the Month for February
Ravichandran Ashwin
Ravichandran Ashwin stated following the conclusion of the four-match test series against England that he was in the ‘happiest phase of his career’. It is evident as to why. The all-rounder has been in such kind of form that can only be described as ‘out of this world’. After a terrific bowling performance in Australia that saw him get the better of the likes of Steve Smith at will, the offie followed it up with a performance for the ages.
In the home series against England, Ashwin picked up 32 wickets. He was also more than handy with the bat as he even got a century in the second test. He broke record after record during the series and was rightly named the Man of the Series. To add to the laurels, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has now named Ashwin as their Men’s Player of the Month for February. Tammy Beaumont has been given the award in the women’s category.
Ian Bishop explains Ashwin’s selection
Former West Indies bowler and member of the ICC Voting Academy for the Player of the Month awards, Ian Bishop spoke as to why Ashwin was selected and said, “Ashwin’s consistent wicket taking, even in helpful conditions have helped to put his team ahead in a very important series. His century in the second Test was as critical as it came when England was trying to claw their way back into the match. That knock ensured that India shut the door on the opposition.”
Ashwin’s focus will now shift to the Indian Premier League (IPL) season for 2021 where he will represent last year’s runners-up Delhi Capitals. The off-spinner isn’t a part of India’s limited overs squads which will play England in 5 T20Is following which there would be 3 ODIs for which the squad hasn’t been announced.
