A founding member of the hip-hop supergroup Ni***s With Attitudes, Ice Cube is among hip-hop’s GOATs. The rapper from Compton was the lyrical force behind the LA supergroup that rose to prominence in the mid-80s. Later on, after the group split, Ice Cube went on to have a successful solo career. His lyricism, storytelling, advanced flows and raw language set the trend for all of West Coast hip-hop.

Ice Cube went on a three-album run of classics during the early 1990s that cemented his status as a solo rapper. His third album in this run, The Predator, had perhaps the most recognizable West Coast song of all time. It Was A Good Day was a headline single from the album that told the story of an ordinary, but pleasant day from his life. It has a lot of iconic lines, but most remarkably, these lines that end the first verse:

Called up the homies and I’m askin’ y’all
“Which park are y’all playin’ basketball?”
Get me on the court and I’m trouble
Last week, f***ed around and got a triple-double
Freakin’ ni***s every way like MJ
I can’t believe today was a good day (S**t)

Ice Cube is currently the founder and CEO of the Big 3 basketball league. The 3-on-3 league features many retired and older NBA players still looking to play competitively. It also allows players trying to get their NBA comebacks going, like Michael Beasley, to play NBA level talent on a televised league.

Beasley recently interviewed the Compton legend about details of his famed pickup basketball game at the park. He specifically asked Cube who was doing the scorekeeping for the game, and Cube replied:

I keep my own stats. Everybody keeps their own stats in their head. They know how many buckets they had. And rebounds and assists. I knew how many steals I had, how many blocks. I knew my field goal percentage. I was smart, sorry!

Despite his jocular tone during the interview, Cube doubled down on his statement with a tweet:

Not only did I get a triple double but I “f***ed around and got a triple double”. I wasn’t even play hard.

Ice Cube has had a huge success with the Big 3 basketball league

Ice Cube’s Big3 league, launched in 2017, has achieved notable success as a professional 3-on-3 basketball venture. Its scale and impact differ from major sports leagues like the NBA by design. The league has expanded from its initial touring model to a city-based model in 2025, with eight teams in cities like Los Angeles, Miami, Houston, and Chicago, reflecting strategic growth.

In 2024, non-CBS games were streamed on X, expanding its digital reach. The league reported over 500,000 viewers on CBS during the 2024 season and attracts around 14,000 fans per weekend event. The league has attracted high-profile former NBA players like Dwight Howard, Kemba Walker, Montrezl Harrell. They also have Hall of Famers as coaches, like Gary Payton, Nancy Lieberman, and Julius Erving.

The first Black-owned sports league in American history, the Big3 has prioritized diversity. They have undertaken unique initiatives, like a mental health policy, CBD for pain management, promoting female coaches and a Black commissioner (Clyde Drexler). The hope for the league is to become a viable alternative for NBA-caliber talents in the near future.
