The Australian Open junior women’s doubles match attracted the tennis world’s attention as they saw a unique scene taking place in Melbourne. This is all due to two identically dressed twins.

America’s Annika Penickova and Kristina Penickova and Czech Slovakia’s Alena Kovackova and Jana Kovackova faced each other in the semifinal clash held on Thursday (January 23). But the talking point was them being twins wearing identical outfits.

The Penickovas and Kovackovas gave each other a tough fight, but in the end, the former emerged as the winner to secure a berth in the final. Annika and Kristina started the match in an emphatic fashion, winning three games in a row, but momentum shifted when the Kovackovas made the comeback before tying the scores 5-5.

Team red, that is the Kovackovas, somehow claimed the first set but were no match for the twins from America as they were restricted to just one game in the second set. The match was pushed to the tie-breaker, with the Penickova sisters winning with scores of 5-7, 6-1, and 11-9.

After knocking out the Kovackovas, the Penickovas locked horns with second-seeded pair, Australia’s Emerson Jones and Britain’s Hannah Klugman, in the final on Friday (January 24).

The doubles match started with Jones and Klugman winning two consecutive games, but the Americans made an incredible comeback to take the set and continued to have the momentum in the second set and finally won the match with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-2.

Kristina played that match following her semifinal clash in singles which she won with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 scoreline over Mia Pohankova to schedule the final match with 4th seed from Japan, Sonobe Wakana, who reached the summit clash with a straight-set win over Jones, the first seed in the tournament.

Jones had also made her Grand Slam debut in the tournament and faced Elena Rybakina in the first round. With her win, Kristina, the sixth seed in singles, has become the first American to reach the Australian Open girls’ singles final since 2012.
