Since the time it was finalized that Alexander Volkanovski will defend his featherweight title at UFC 273 against Chan Sung Jung, former double division champion Henry Cejudo hasn’t taken that decision by the UFC in any ease. Cejudo was the most vocal fighter to demand the fightback when Volkanovski was scheduled to fight Max Holloway in a trilogy in the preceding pay-per-view.

Cejudo last fought in April 2020 when he defended his bantamweight championship against Dominick Cruz and decided to retire at the top of the sport not only by holding 2 simultaneous championships but previously, also having an Olympic gold medal to his combat sports credentials in freestyle wrestling. Volkanovski last fought at UFC 266 in the 2021 fight of the year contender against Brian Ortega where he defended his title for the second time.

After the announcement of Volkanovski vs Jung at UFC 273 which will happen on April 2022 in Brooklyn, New York, White gave an interview to BT Sport to give an update about this year’s calendar in which he discusses the reason for not considering Cejudo in the making of the fight. He said, The guy’s retired; he’s been off for how many years now? He wants to come in and fight Alexander Volkanovski?… For Cejudo to retire and think he should be able to come in and jump into any weight division and take on the champion- it’s not how it works.”

Cejudo came out to Twitter to post a picture of White’s comments and quoted above it “So if I had blonde hair and blue eyes or if I was a Canadian with an accent, maybe you would give it to me? I defend both my belts, unlike GPS. I left on top and retired on that Monday to give the rest of the division a chance. You are plain out scared that I will win.@danawhite

Cejudo is clearly referring to the time when UFC Hall of Famer Georges St-Pierre was fighting for the middleweight title, coming out of retirement and a division above his previous weight class after 4 years back in 2017 when St-Pierre defeated the then-champion Michael Bisping to become one of the few people to hold title belts in 2 different weight classes, with Cejudo being one of those champions too, having held the flyweight and the bantamweight titles, but more importantly, Cejudo held them simultaneously.

What do you make of Cejudo’s response to White’s comments? Does Cejudo’s abrupt retirement has prevented him from the opportunity today to possibly become the first UFC fighter to hold belts at three weight classes? With or without the featherweight belt, where do you rank Cejudo amongst the all-time greats of the sport of MMA?
