January 16th, 2024: This year’s NFL season has been nothing short of entertaining. With just two more games set to take place before the Super Bowl is set, one thing is certain, at least one of the two teams will be an underdog. The biggest storylines of this season have been the Detroit Lions and the Baltimore Ravens. While the former team has made it this far along the playoffs for the first time since 1992, the latter is just two wins short of earning Lamar Jackson his first Super Bowl victory in his first season after he signed a massive extension.

The Baltimore Ravens ended their season on a high note. They won 13 of their games and lost just 4. They beat the Detroit Lions in the regular season by a whooping margin of 32 points, they beat the San Francisco 49ers by a margin of 14, and the Miami Dolphins, a team that has excelled on offense all season long was destroyed by the Ravens by a margin of 37.

Baltimore has emerged as the clear-cut favorite to win the Super Bowl at this point, the bigger question is would a championship cement this team’s position as one of the most dominant teams of all time? An argument can be made for the same. Historically, the Baltimore Ravens franchise has been known for having a different level of physicality when it comes to defense. This season, the story has been no different.

The Baltimore Ravens rank sixth in passing yards allowed in the NFL, but the team leads the league in sacks with 57 and yards per attempt. The team ranks second in passing touchdowns allowed and comes in at number three when it is with respect to interceptions. With key weapons such as Odell Beckham Jr. who has made a resurgence in Baltimore and rookie Zay Flowers, Jackson has now sent the opposing defenses scratching their head. This is primarily because the team can not just throw the ball but also run it and this dual-threat game played by the Ravens has proved to be extremely effective. The fact that the team has had nine games this year in which they have beat the top teams in the NFL by a margin of two or more than two touchdowns is a testament to the efficacy of their style of play. This has never been seen in the NFL before.

Are the 2023-24 Ravens the most dominant team in NFL history?

While Baltimore has had a great year, the team cannot be deemed to be the most dominant of all time. The primary reason being the 2001 Ravens defense. In Super Bowl XXXV, Baltimore restricted the New York Giants to a meager score of 7 points while dropping 34 on them. It was a show like none other, the most dominant show of defensive prowess in NFL history. Ray Lewis won the Super Bowl MVP award and rightfully so. The Giants were held to 152 yards of offense in total.

The numbers are on the side of this year’s Ravens. The team beat the 2014 Patriots when it comes to beating teams above .500 as they managed to go 6-0 while having a margin of 26.1 points per game. That is the most since 2000.
