Iga Swiatek was excited at her third-round victory over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova at the 2024 US Open. However, this time around, it was not only her who was happy for the win. The 23-year-old’s coach Tomasz Wiktorowski, who always wears a serious look, was all smiles following the victory.

Last year, Swaitek was then eliminated by Jelena Ostapenko in the third round of the US Open. This season, following her victories on clay, she failed to live up to expectations at Wimbledon, where she exited in the third round. She arrived at the US Open as a top favorite following her good run at the Cincinnati Open.

After two comfortable wins in the opening rounds, she faced Pavlyuchenkova in the third round. She had beaten the Russian 6-0, 6-0 in the Italian Open in May but had to dig deep on Saturday (August 31). Pavlyuchenkova competed with Swiatek in the first set but the World No.1 raised her level during the match, making just one unforced error to win 6-4, 6-2.

Following the victory, her coach Wiktorowski applauded Swiatek’s impressive display. The World No. 1 vowed to give her coach more opportunities to bare his teeth and stated that the variety in her game expanded since they began working together.

It’s not like my tennis is perfect. It sometimes feels weird because I’ve been No.1 and winning these tournaments but I still feel like really I need to work on some stuff. But since I started working with Tomasz, I’ve been feeling like I have more variety and options on court. I’ll try to give them more opportunities to smile because for sure it’s not easy for the coach to smile. So I’ll try to play the best tennis possible so we all can enjoy it.

Swiatek’s partnership with Wiktorowski has lasted for over two years. The two joined hands in 2022 and have since won many historic titles together.

Iga Swiatek admits opponents now know her style of game ahead of her fourth-round match against Liudmila Samsonova

Iga Swiatek will face World No.19 Liudmila Samsonova in the fourth round of the US Open. The Polish star is hoping to win her second Grand Slam of the year after the French Open. This season, much of her success came during the clay swing, with her last hard court title coming at Indian Wells in March.

The Pole failed to win the Cincinnati Open days after winning the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics. Ahead of her match against Samsonova on Monday (September 2), Swiatek admitted that her opponents are getting to figure out her style of game, making it difficult for her to earn her wins.

Getting to No. 1, it happened suddenly for me. In the beginning, I feel like my opponents didn’t really know what to expect from me and how I play. 2023 was challenging because I had a target on my back and also players learned my game style.

Swiatek has a 3-0 lead in the head-to-head against Samsonova ahead of their US Open clash. She has only dropped one set against the Russian and is the favorite to win the match and keep alive her title bid in New York.
