Iga Swiatek suffered a disappointing defeat in her second group-stage match at the WTA Finals. She lost to Coco Gauff in straight sets and later talked about one fault she wanted to improve.

In her first group-stage match, the Pole overcame reigning Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova in three sets. Against Gauff, she was expected to emerge as the winner as she was 11-1 in their head-to-head meetings before that match.

The American, however, dominated from the start and stopped Swiatek from forcing a comeback in the second set, before she eventually registered her second victory over the World No.2. After the match, Swiatek said she made some bad mistakes but would try to correct them the next time she plays.

I know what mistakes I made, and this match will force me to be more disciplined in the future. I know when I make bad decisions, which shots failed, and how not to repeat them. My serve is sometimes shaky. There were games where I served great, but there were also games where I felt strange. Next time I will try to make it much more stable.

Iga Swiatek told Canal+ Sport

Swiatek is now set to lock horns with Jessica Pegula. Against the American, the former World No.1 is 6-4 and last clashed with her in the quarterfinals of the 2024 US Open.

Garbine Muguruza says Iga Swiatek and other players shouldn’t complain about schedule

Iga Swiatek complained of a hectic WTA schedule as players are expected to play at least 20 mandatory tournaments (the four Grand Slam events, 10 WTA 1000, and six WTA 500 events). Former World No.1 Garbine Muguruza, however, is not of the same opinion.

I don’t think there’s a reason to complain. I think it’s the opposite. It’s great. You make your own schedule and you know your own capacity.

Garbine Muguruza told The National

Swiatek’s skipping the mandatory tournaments denied her the chance to end the year as World No.1 as she was dethroned by Aryna Sabalenka from the top position. Sabalenka, after her two group-stage victories and Swiatek’s defeat to Coco Gauff, secured the year-end No.1 on the WTA Tour.

Swiatek is playing her first tournament since her US Open exit in September. As she needed rest, she skipped tournaments before announcing that she had parted ways with Tomasz Wiktorowski and, because of her search for a new coach, she decided to skip the Asian swing.
