Iga Swiatek’s coach, Wim Fissette, has responded to criticism from Nick Kyrgios and others following the fallout from the Pole’s doping case. The World No. 2 recently served a one-month suspension after testing positive for TMZ before the Cincinnati Open in August 2024.

The 23-year-old proved that her melatonin medication had been contaminated, which led to a ruling of “no significant fault” for the violation. Despite this, reactions to her case have been mixed. Kyrgios, along with some others, has accused Swiatek and Jannik Sinner of playing the victim in their doping cases.

Swiatek was initially suspended for 22 days before her successful appeal reduced the penalty. When the final ruling came, she had just eight days left to serve. This allows her to start the 2025 season on time. She will represent Poland at the United Cup, starting on December 27.

There will always be people who will be negative. But I think that anyone who has read all the documents that Iga has provided and shown to the whole world, sees what happened – and should understand that it was just bad luck. It can happen to any player. I think that those people who are negative about the case, we should ask a few questions about Iga’s report and thus check whether they have actually read it.

In 2024, Swiatek won five WTA titles, including her fifth Grand Slam at Roland Garros. However, she did not win another title after Paris and lost the World No. 1 ranking to Aryna Sabalenka.

Part of this was due to missing the China Open and Wuhan Open while serving her provisional suspension. Swiatek’s partnership with Fissette began after her suspension, with the two working together during the WTA Finals and Billie Jean King Cup Finals.

I am probably going to play [Grand] Slams, Masters events, and maybe a couple of [ATP] 500’s. Everything feels good, the scar is disgusting and is on both sides, but it feels okay.

Kyrgios has played only one match in the past two seasons. His last appearance was in June 2023, where he lost in straight sets to China’s Yibing Wu at the Stuttgart ATP 250 event. Since then, the 29-year-old has battled injuries and underwent surgery, with concerns that he might never play again.

Despite these challenges, Kyrgios has been working hard to recover. He is determined to return to the top of men’s tennis and has been ramping up his training ahead of the new season.

Kyrgios will begin his 2025 campaign at the Brisbane International. Fans are eager to see him back on the court, hoping he can reclaim his spot as one of the most exciting players in the game.
