Iga Swiatek recently compared herself to Carlos Alcaraz, noting the stark differences in how they handle pressure. Swiatek, who is currently the WTA No. 1, admitted that she couldn’t manage the kind of celebrations Alcaraz does. Despite her top ranking, the Polish player has faced a challenging few months in tennis.
After winning the French Open, the tour headed onto the grass courts, and as expected, Swiatek bowed out early. She has never performed well on grass and this year was no different. She lost in the third round to Yulia Putintseva.
However, soon, she headed back to the clay court for the Olympics, but had to deal with a lot of pressure to win. She faced a couple of tough rounds against Irina Begu and Danielle Collins before losing out to the eventual gold medalist, Qinwen Zheng. This loss cost her a chance at gold and made her settle for bronze after beating Anna Karolina-Schmiedlova for it.
Recently, Swiatek was interviewed by a Polish media outlet Sportowefakty.WP, where she answered multiple questions about her game. One question that came her way was on how she handles the pressure of being WTA No.1.
To answer this, Swiatek brought up the name of former ATP No.1 Carlos Alcaraz to explain how they are poles apart in their celebrations and how they handle pressure. While she stated that Alcaraz travels with more people and has more fun celebrating after a win, she is an introvert who loves peace.
Everyone has a different way. Carlos Alcaraz has a completely different personality than me. He travels to tournaments with many people, enjoys life, has fun and celebrates successes in a completely different way. For me, it's more important to have peace around me, take care of simple pleasures and spend time with my loved ones.Iga Swiatek said
Alcaraz also won this year’s French Open and had a huge celebration for it. Not only did he get a tattoo of the Eiffel Tower inked on his leg, but also partied in Ibiza. Swiatek, on her part, took a vacation and some time off tennis to get herself ready for grass surface.
Iga Swiatek credits psychologist Daria Abramowicz for coping with pressure
Time and again, Iga Swiatek has credited her psychologist Daria Abramowicz for her support and help in dealing with pressure. Even in a recent interview with a Polish media outlet, WTA No. 1 mentioned her psychologist in helping her deal with the pressure.
A lot of credit for this goes to Daria Abramowicz because without working with her, I wouldn't be where I am.Iga Swiatek said
In continuing her discussion about handling pressure, Swiatek thanked her coaches and psychologist for choosing nice places for her to rest. As an introvert, she enjoys holidays and spending time alone, and her coaches ensure she has plenty of opportunities to do so.
