Iga Swiatek reflects on her Olympic bronze medal win
Iga Swiatek, who was a heavy favorite at the 2024 Paris Olympics, was no match for China’s Qinwen Zheng in the semifinals. Swiatek lost the match in straight sets and took home the bronze medal with a straight-set win over Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.
Ahead of the Cincinnati Open, Swiatek reflected on her Olympic campaign. Although the tournament was ‘stressful’ for her, she said she has learned from her experience.
But I'm happy that I could leave Paris with a medal and with a lot of knowledge about myself. The most important thing for me was to learn from this experience. I was proud of myself, and I was happy that I could deal with all this pressure and still get a medal. It wasn't like a normal tournament, for sure.Iga Swiatek said at the press conference ahead of the Cincinnati Open
It was Swiatek’s second appearance at the quadrennial event, having made her debut at the 2020 Tokyo Games where she played in both singles and doubles but failed to reach the semifinals in both the events. The 23-year-old was set to play with compatriot Hubert Hurkacz in mixed doubles in Paris, but his injury forced him to withdraw from the tournament.
Following the Olympics, the five-time Grand Slam champion skipped the Canadian Open and played at the Cincinnati Open. Although she failed to make it to the final, she will be chasing her sixth Grand Slam title at the US Open which gets underway on August 26.
