WTA No.1 Iga Swiatek has remained a standout player ever since she broke into the Top 10 in 2021. The 22-year-old already has 20 titles including four Grand Slam titles to her name. But all the same, she’s known for always using the word ‘we’ after every win, and she finally revealed the reason behind it.
This season, Swiatek has won three titles, two Masters 1000 and a WTA 500 strengthening her position in No.1. Her most recent title was at the Madrid Open, which she won after more than three hours of gritty battle against former champion Aryna Sabalenka in the final.
The Polish star began her climb to No.1 in 2021 after winning the Italian Open in Rome that year. The following year she went on to claim the French Open for the second time after winning it first in 2020. She climbed to No.1 in 2023. Despite losing it to Sabalenka in September, she reclaimed it by winning the WTA Finals in November.
However, Swiatek is known for using the word ‘we’ when writing about every win, especially on social media. When asked the reason for it, she revealed that she was lucky to meet people who developed her into a top player.
I realize that I owe a lot to the people around me. Indeed, I can play tennis, but it was those I met along the way at the right time and place who helped me develop. I think I'm one of those athletes who was very lucky that from the very beginning they met people who perfectly sensed what their athletes needed. I appreciate it very much, without my current team I wouldn't be here. I wouldn't be able to manage myself, my career or even my talent in such a way as to use all these potentials. That's why I value my team so much.Iga Swiatek said via Elle Polska
Swiatek will be hoping to win more with her team this season. The Polish star immediately went to hug her team after winning the Madrid Open even before basking in the glory, which proves how much they mean to her.
Iga Swiatek to face a tricky test in her bid to become the sixth woman to win her third Rome title
Iga Swiatek will be hoping to become the sixth WTA player to win three Rome Masters titles. She has won the Rome tournament twice in 2021 and 2022 but fell short last year. She is projected to face Coco Gauff in the semifinals and either Elena Rybakina or Aryna Sabalenka in the final.
Swiatek will begin her Rome campaign against Bernarda Pera. She might then face American Sloane Stephens in the third round and then might take on Ekaterina Alexandrova in the fourth round.
Alexandrova had upset her in Miami’s fourth round a week after winning the Indian Wells Masters. She will be hoping to earn her revenge against the No.14 seed if they eventually meet in Rome.
