There was a massive upset at the 2024 Wimbledon when Yulia Putintseva ousted Iga Swiatek in three sets. Swiatek, who has never been fully comfortable on grass, managed to take the lead before letting her opponent mount a comeback.
The defeat ended Swiatek’s 21-match winning streak. Despite starting well against Putintseva, she failed to match the Kazakh’s intensity as the match progressed and suffered a shock exit in the third round.
Learning from the first set loss, Putintseva incorporated more drop shots, wide forehands, and slices in her game, which got the Pole doubting her moves. Swiatek started to move more on grass, where she is known to be weak and that contributed to her downfall.
After the match, the delighted Putintseva said that she felt like she won the match through her game and that the result had nothing to do with what Swiatek did. The Pole, however, disagreed with that view.
I think it’s never only one person. We’re literally playing a tennis match. It’s about what I’m playing as well. I totally let her come back into the game in the second set. I shouldn’t have done that. I made some mistakes as well. But for sure, she used her chance.

She had hit 38 unforced errors in that match, which played a big role in her defeat. She will be hoping to regroup and regain her confidence before the Paris Olympics.
Iga Swiatek learns from her mistake and hopes to rest better before Wimbledon next year
Iga Swiatek had very little rest heading into the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. She gave her all during the clay swing, winning three titles on the trot — the Madrid Open, Italian Open, and French Open.
She skipped any grass court preparations and headed straight into Wimbledon. Although she was cruising through her initial rounds, the 23-year-old struggled against Putintseva, eventually losing in three sets. She later vowed to correct her mistakes going forward.
My tank of really pushing myself to the limits became suddenly empty. I was kind of surprised. But I know what I did wrong after Roland Garros. I didn’t really rest properly. I’m not going to make this mistake again.
Iga Swiatek said in the press conference
Putintseva will now look to build on the big win when she takes on Jelena Ostapenko for a spot in the quarterfinals.
