Iga Swiatek is back on the tour as she is bidding to defend the WTA Finals. Ahead of her first group stage match, Swiatek talked about needing improvements in her game while working with her new coach, Wim Fissette.

When asked about what changes she would hope to make in her game, Swiatek joked about not revealing her weakness before admitting that she wants to improve her serve.

I for sure want to improve my serve, as I’ve been doing for the past few years. I feel like I still need to continue that. For sure, I’m not a complete player. I think tactically there are many ways I could go and have more variety on the court. Wim has some nice ideas. Honestly, for now, we’ve just been preparing for this tournament and getting to know each other. The real changes, we’re going to talk about are during the off-season because that’s the proper time to do it.

Swiatek, following a trophy drought, parted ways with Tomasz Wiktorowski. While searching for a coach, she decided to skip the Asian swing and, during that time, she hired Fissette. She hasn’t played a tournament since her quarterfinal exit at the US Open and the WTA Finals will be her first tournament under Fissette.

Swiatek will kick-start her campaign in Riyadh with a match against reigning Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova on Sunday (November 3). Next up, she will face Coco Gauff, followed by her match against Jessica Pegula.

Iga Swiatek’s head-to-head record against her three group-stage opponents

Iga Swiatek has beaten Coco Gauff 11 times in their 12 encounters. They met this season twice, at the French Open and the Rome Open, and Swiatek won both encounters before clinching both the titles. The only time Gauff came out on top was at the 2023 Cincinnati Open, which she won in three sets.

Swiatek has locked horns with Jessica Pegula 10 times and leads 6-4 in their head-to-head meetings. This season in their 10th meeting at the quarterfinals of the US Open, it was Pegula who won, before reaching the summit clash.

Last year, the defending champion, who did not lose a single game, defeated the American in straight sets in the final to win her first WTA Finals. Swiatek, however, is 2-2 against Krejcikova. The World No. 13 won their last encounter in the 2023 Dubai Open final.
