Although Iga Swiatek eased past Daria Kasatkina, her chances to qualify for the semifinals of the WTA Finals hung by a thread. Her semifinal chances completely depended on Coco Gauff‘s third group-stage match result.
Swiatek ended her group-stage matches with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Kasatkina, which she secured in just 51 minutes. The Russian came in as an alternate after Jessica Pegula withdrew from the tournament due to injury.
In spite of winning two matches, Swiatek failed to qualify for the semifinals as Gauff didn’t emerge victorious against Barbora Krejcikova. Swiatek had defeated Krejcikova but Gauff beat her in the next match.
Gauff had already booked a place in the semifinals and as Krejcikova emerged as the winner against her, Swiatek got eliminated from the tournament. The American, prior to her clash with Krejcikova, defeated Pegula and Swiatek. As Gauff failed to win her third match, she also ended up being second in the group stage.
Gauff’s defeat means a clash with World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals. Qinwen Zheng would have faced the 20-year-old if she had clinched the victory over Krejcikova. Gauff has met Sabaleka eight times and is 4-4 in their head-to-head encounter. Against Zheng, however, the American won the only match they played against each other.

It's really unfair for Iga,who didn't have any influence on JPeg withdrawal, yet her win over Dasha means almost nothing

I would really like to know how it was calculated. Gauff, Krejcikova and Iga all won two matches and lost one. Weird.

The WTA Finals was Swiatek’s first event since her US Open exit. At Flushing Meadows, she was defeated by eventual finalist Pegula in the quarterfinals. Since then, Swiatek, as she complained of fatigue post a long clay season, including the Paris Olympics, ended up skipping several tournaments.
The main reason behind her withdrawal from the Asian swing was her search for a new coach, for she had parted ways with Tomasz Wiktorowski and wanted to have a non-Polish coach on her team. She hired renowned coach Wim Fissette but unfortunately for her, things didn’t go according to her plans. Swiatek has now ended this season with five titles and an Olympic bronze medal.
