Iga Swiatek has congratulated World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka following her US Open victory. The Belarusian defeated American Jessica Pegula in straight sets to win her third career Grand Slam, the second Major this year, and also her first in New York.

Sabalenka has cemented herself as one of the best players on the WTA tour with her consistent performances over the past two years. She won her first Grand Slam at the Australian Open last season and defended that title in January without dropping a set.

Before the US Open, Sabalenka beat Pegula in straight sets to win the Cincinnati Open, her first WTA Masters 1000 title of the year. She took that confidence into the season’s final Major, winning her first two matches in straight sets.

The Belarusian dropped a set in the third-round win against Ekaterina Alexandrova. She then defeated Olympic gold medalist Qinwen Zheng in the quarterfinals and ended Emma Navarro’s run in the semifinals.

Against Pegula, in the final, she displayed class and showed no sign of weakness. The American battled brilliantly for every ball, but Sabalenka simply overwhelmed her with her powerful display. She won 7-5, 7-5 to clinch her third hard court Major title.

Iga Swiatek, who lost to Pegula in the semifinals at Flushing Meadows, took to social media to congratulate Sabalenka for her victory.

Congratulations @SabalenkaA Amazing run.

Sabalenka has now surpassed Victoria Azarenka to become the Belarusian player with the most major titles. She is also the fifth woman in the Open Era to win both hard court Grand Slam titles in the same year.

Aryna Sabalenka admits she worked hard to win her third Grand Slam at the US Open

Aryna Sabalenka admitted that she worked really hard to win her maiden US Open title. The 26-year-old reached the final last year and lost to Coco Gauff despite winning the first set. This season, Sabalenka withdrew from Wimbledon due to a shoulder injury.

The World No. 2 decided to skip the Paris Olympics to focus on the North American hard court swing. After not winning going all the way at the Citi Open (semifinal exit) and Canadian Open (quarterfinal exit), she went on to win the Cincinnati Open without dropping a set.

She entered the US Open with momentum on her side and was dominant throughout her campaign. Following her victory against Jessica Pegula in the final, Sabalenka revealed that she had worked really hard to win the US Open.

Today I just keep reminding myself that this is the US Open final, of course she’s going to fight really hard for it and it’s not going to be easy, and I have to work really hard to get it.

The 266-year-old will now focus on the Asian WTA swing and WTA Finals in Riyadh. She failed to win any title after the US Open last year and will hope the same fate doesn’t repeat itself. Like last year, she has the chance to win a few more tournaments and finish the season as the WTA World No. 1.
