Iga Swiatek‘s perhaps the most controversial phase of her career was the doping scandal. Last year, she tested positive for trimetazidine, which contaminated a melatonin medicine she was taking at that time.

After failing the drug test, Swiatek remained three weeks on the sidelines, missing mandatory tournaments, which affected her rankings. The Pole was then handed a one-month ban by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), and this sparked controversy because many believed she was given preferential treatment due to her high-profile status.

She recently sat for an interview with Andy Roddick for his Served podcast. There, the 2003 US Open champion asked her about the exact time she found out that she had failed the doping test.

Well, I was in a photoshoot with my sponsor in Warsaw. I was in the middle of it. We were just kind of changing locations. So I went on my email and I saw that got an email from this portal and I thought it’s just a reminder of my whereabouts or something. Well, I didn’t even read it because I started crying.

Swiatek’s agents thought the Polish star cried because someone had died. There was confusion in her team as they too had no idea how to react in that situation. Swiatek then contemplated whether she would continue with the photoshoot because her face was all red.

I was crying for probably like 40 minutes. But, you know, on the other hand, I knew that I can’t really probably tell them about it. So, I just continued for next three hours. And I got to say these were the best scenes that I shot. So I must be a good actress.

Missing those three weeks affected her rankings as she lost the No.1 spot to Aryna Sabalenka. After her ban, Swiatek struggled a lot, but despite that, she was making deep runs.

Only at the Italian Open did she fail to progress to the quarterfinals, losing in the third round to Danielle Collins. Swiatek then reached the final for the first time since Roland Garros last year at the Bad Homburg Open.

It was her first final on grass, but World No.4 Jessica Pegula denied her the win, winning the match in straight sets. Next, she shocked herself and the tennis world by winning the Wimbledon title with a 6-0, 6-0 scoreline over Amanda Anisimova.

Iga Swiatek shares the recipe for pasta with strawberries

Iga Swiatek, after her victory over Danielle Collins in the third round of Wimbledon, revealed that she would be eating pasta with strawberries, to the surprise of the Centre Court crowd. Later, Swiatek posted the picture of the dish. During the Served podcast, Andy Roddick asked for the complete recipe of the Polish dish.

But basically, we’ve got to smash the strawberries so they’re all kind of juicy, and then they mix perfectly with the pasta and the yogurt or the cream. So the thing is like, yeah, you should smash them as hard as possible.

Swiatek is in Montreal for the WTA 1000 Canadian Open. The second seed has received a bye and will kick-start her campaign against Guo Hanyu, who knocked out Yulia Puntintseva in the previous round.

Swiatek has never progressed beyond the semifinal in Montreal, reaching the stage only in 2023. Last year, she had skipped the tournament and instead started her North American swing at the Cincinnati Open, but failed to reach the final because of her defeat to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka. The Belarusian ace then knocked the six-time Grand Slam champion out of the US Open as well, beating her in the quarterfinals.
