It has been quite an eventful few months for Iga Swiatek. The 23-year-old recently made changes in her coaching staff, parting ways with long-term coach Tomasz Wiktorowski and partnering with Wim Fissette. She arrived at the WTA Finals with the hope of reclaiming a World No.1 position from Aryna Sabalenka, but she failed to do so.
However, while that has transpired, the Polish star was looking forward to reaching the semifinals of the WTA Finals. She won her opening match against Barbora Krejcikova in three sets. But, lost her second Group match against Coco Gauff. She was supposed to play Jessica Pegula in the third match, but the American withdrew.
Pegula was replaced by Daria Kasatkina at the event and faced Swiatek on Thursday (November 7). The latter did beat the Russian star 6-1, 6-0 in 51 minutes, a match which her coach Fissette called perfect. She was anxiously waiting to know if she would progress to the semifinals of the tournament.
The World No.2 was taken by surprise during her post-match conference when the journalist revealed to her that her outing against Kasatkina didn’t matter, rather the tie between Gauff and Krejcikova did.

The journalist further explained that Gauff would have to beat Krejcikova for her to qualify. Nonetheless, the reverse was the case for Swiatek. Krejcikova beat her American opponent 7-5, 6-4 to qualify for the next round. She will face Qinwen Zheng in the semifinals, while Gauff faces Sabalenka.
Iga Swiatek stays positive after failing to qualify for the semifinals of the WTA Finals
Iga Swiatek‘s 2024 WTA Tour season is officially over despite winning two of her three matches at the WTA Finals. The Polish star failed to defend the season-ending tournament title despite being among the favorites. She came third in the round-robin Purple Group at the Finals.
However, after finding out from Journalists that she wouldn’t qualify after Barbora Krejcikova’s win, she remained positive. She revealed that the disqualification would give her some days off while adding that she gave her best on the court.
Swiatek will now lead Poland at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Malaga. She will be joined by Magdalena Frech, Magda Linette, Maja Chwalinska, and Katarzyna Kawa. The tournament is scheduled to get underway on November 13.
