World No. 2 Iga Swiatek started off her 2025 season with a strong performance at the United Cup, where she helped Poland reach the finals. However, she lost to World No. 3 Coco Gauff in straight sets at the finals, leading to the USA clinching their second United Cup title.
Swiatek then moved on to the Australian Open, where she reached her second Australian Open semifinals. Despite being in excellent form throughout the tournament, the five-time Grand Slam champion lost to 19th-ranked Madison Keys in the semifinals. Keys further stunned everyone by outplaying World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the finals to win her maiden Grand Slam title.
“I know how this sport works, and I understand that winning titles doesn’t always depend on oneself. The key is to give 100% on and off the court, in terms of effort and commitment. If I can do that, opportunities and good levels in my tennis will come.”
Iga Swiatek said in an interview (H/T: Punto De Break)
Swiatek will now play at the Qatar Open, where she has reigned champion for the past three years. This year marks the 23rd edition of the WTA Qatar Open, a WTA 1000 tournament on the 2025 WTA Tour. This hardcourt tournament will be held in Doha, Qatar, from 9 to 15 February 2025.
At the Qatar Open pre-tournament press conference, Swiatek discussed her mentality during matches. She emphasized that it’s never helpful to think about winning tournaments before actually playing them. According to her, the key is to take things step by step, respect all opponents, and prepare each match in the best possible way.
Iga Swiatek is yet to secure a title since the 2024 Roland Garros
Polish star Iga Swiatek has yet to secure a title since the 2024 Roland Garros, but she doesn’t want to dwell on that, instead focusing on gradual improvement. She faces Greece’s Maria Sakkari in the opening round of the 2025 Qatar Open, with whom she has a head-to-head of 3-3. This will be their second meeting at the Qatar Open, along with their seventh meeting on court.

Iga Swiatek first won the Qatar Open in 2022, where she defeated Anett Kontaveit in straight sets. She defended her title the following year, defeating Jessica Pegula in straight sets. In 2024, she defeated Elena Rybakina in straight sets to clinch this title for a third consecutive time.
Several top women’s players will compete in Doha, e.g., Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, Jasmine Paolini, Elena Rybakina, Paula Badosa, Jessica Pegula, Zheng Qinwen, and Emma Navarro. Australian Open 2025 champion Madison Keys will skip this tournament due to a lingering hamstring injury.
