Iga Swiatek responded to strong comments made by her quarterfinal opponent Danielle Collins after their match on Wednesday (July 31). The match was crucial for both players as they competed for a spot in the semi-final.
It was a drama-filled encounter with much happening during their match. What began as an exciting clash between two talented players ended in a heated finish. The first two sets were all about their tennis, with Swiatek and Collins exchanging sets to force a decisive third set.
During the third set, the first incident that went down was when the American hit Swiatek hard with the ball. It was unintentional and the Pole also brushed it off. However, Swiatek then stopped Collins’ serve pointing at the crowd behind her, and in return had to listen to some of Collins’ words.
Unfortunately, Collins was unable to continue and retired from the match that gave Swiatek the win and a place in the last four. However, the American veteran did not leave without exchanging a few words with Swiatek. Frustrated, she exchanged a few words with the Pole after the match.
In the post-match interview, Collins had called Swiatek out for being insincere about her. She was furious with the Pole, who appeared clueless. When asked about the interaction, Swiatek defended herself, stating she wasn’t disrespectful and had genuinely congratulated Collins on her career.
Well, I won't argue about it, because I've never done anything unpleasant towards her. I just wanted to congratulate her on her successful career, because we all know that this is her last year on tour…Iga Swiatek said in the post-match interview
Iga Swiatek clears up the surrounding situation of delayed bathroom break
WTA No.1 Iga Swiatek had a lot to deal with during and after her quarterfinal match against Danielle Collins. The American ace did put up a fight but afterward blamed Swiatek for being insincere.
One instance that frustrated Collins was Swiatek’s extended bathroom break. The World No. 1 is known for taking these breaks when she’s trailing in a match, and she did so again on Wednesday when she was down. After the match, Swiatek explained that she didn’t break any rules and used the time to freshen up.
Here I asked the lady who escorted me how much time I had. She didn't tell me that. She replied that they don't count time here and that I should just leave when I feel like it. So I used this time to change and cool down, and then I returned to the court.Iga Swiatek said during the post-match conference
Up next, Swiatek will play Chinese pro Qinwen Zheng for a place in the finals. She has entered the medal rounds and will aim for her maiden gold on clay. As the only top 5 player remaining, Swiatek faces immense pressure to perform.
