Tennis star Iga Swiatek was thrilled as Poland reached their first volleyball Gold medal match in 48 years. The Polish volleyball team made a comeback from a 2-1 deficit to defeat the United States in the semifinals.

Swiatek, who won a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, was disappointed not to achieve her dream of a Gold medal. However, she was happy to see other Polish athletes succeeding. She tweeted just one word on X to celebrate her national volleyball team’s historic achievement.

The two teams played an exciting match in front of over 10,000 fans. After splitting the first four sets, the European team had the edge in the tie-breaker, winning 3-2 (25-23, 25-27, 14-25, 25-23, 15-13) to advance.

In the last decade, Poland’s volleyball team regained its spot among the top teams globally. They won major titles like the FIVB World Championship in 2014 and 2018, the Volleyball Nations League in 2023, and the European Championship in 2023. Now, they are guaranteed an Olympic medal in Paris.

Iga Swiatek secures qualification at the WTA Finals in Riyadh

The WTA announced that Iga Swiatek is the first player to qualify for the 2024 WTA Finals. This event will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from November 2 to 9. It is the first time Riyadh will host the WTA Finals.

Swiatek is the defending champion of the WTA Finals. She led the PIF Race to the WTA Finals for most of the season. The World No.1 topped the leaderboard in March. This is her fourth year in a row qualifying for the event.

This season, Swiatek won five titles. All her wins were at the WTA 1000 and Grand Slam levels. She had a 21-match win streak on clay and grass. She won in Doha, Indian Wells, Madrid, Rome, and Roland Garros. The Polish superstar also helped her native team reach the United Cup final. She had a perfect 5-0 record in singles play. The 23-year-old had an impressive season overall.
