Iga Swiatek, the world’s top tennis player, has shown support for Caroline Garcia after the French player faced online abuse following her US Open loss. Garcia, who was the 28th seed, lost unexpectedly to Renata Zarazua from Mexico in the first round of the tournament on Tuesday, (August 27).

Iga Swiatek holds off Kamilla Rakhimova in the US Open first round
Top seed Iga Swiatek faced a tough challenge from lucky loser Kamilla Rakhimova in the first round of the US Open. The Polish superstar managed to save three set points in a tense second-set tiebreak before securing a 6-4, 7-6(6) win. The match lasted 1 hour and 52 minutes.
The match started with Swiatek dominating, quickly taking a 4-0 lead and losing only three points. However, Rakhimova, who had pushed Aryna Sabalenka to three sets earlier in Washington, fought back. Swiatek struggled to close the match while serving at 5-4 in the second set, eventually needing a tight tiebreak to advance.
The 2022 US Open champion will face qualifier Ena Shibahara in the second round. Shibahara, the former doubles World No.4, switched to singles this year and won her first Grand Slam singles match after a long three-set battle against Daria Saville.
Rakhimova and Swiatek, both born in 2001, have known each other since their junior days. Once Rakhimova found her rhythm, she forced Swiatek into long rallies with her strong defense. The lucky loser ensured the World No.1 struggled to finish points, resulting in 41 unforced errors from Swiatek.
